Revamping Cybersecurity Management for Healthcare IoT

Cylera, a healthcare cybersecurity leader, leverages digital twin technology to secure IoT devices across hospital networks. This technology allows administrators to monitor, control, and assess vulnerabilities in real time, mitigating risks effectively. As the sole UX and product lead, I led a comprehensive redesign to modernize Cylera’s platform, originally built by engineers without UX guidance.

This redesign included a UX audit to address key improvement areas, Figma-based prototyping, iterative testing with users, and the creation of a scalable design system. These efforts resulted in a user-centered, competitive platform aligned with best-in-class standards for the healthcare cybersecurity sector.

Problem Statement

The original Cylera platform presented significant usability challenges, including hard-to-read graphs, lack of personalization for diverse user roles, and limited guidance on next steps. Cylera’s users range from CISOs and Security Engineers to BioMed Engineers and System Administrators, each with unique needs that the previous platform did not adequately address. Key next steps were also unclear, limiting users' ability to manage IoT security confidently.

Project Goals: Modernize the platform, enable role-based customization, improve data visualization and reporting, enhance integration management, and support real-time notifications for rapid response.

Process & Research

To align the platform with user needs, I conducted a detailed research phase focused on understanding each user persona’s priorities and tasks:

Key InsightPersonalizing the experience by role and providing clearer, more actionable data displays would significantly enhance platform usability, engagement, and operational efficiency.

Design Iterations

1. Initial Sketches and Wireframes

2. Prototyping and Testing

3. High-Fidelity Designs

Implementation Process

Due to Cylera’s extensive client base, we initiated a phased rollout with a pilot group, gathering feedback on role-specific features, reporting functionality, and real-time notifications. This pilot phase allowed for additional adjustments before a broader release.

Outcome & Impact

The redesigned Cylera platform received highly positive feedback from both new and existing customers, with strong user acceptance and adoption rates for the new features. The improved reporting, real-time notifications, and role-based dashboards significantly enhanced the user experience and supported Cylera’s goals of delivering proactive and efficient IoT cybersecurity management. This successful redesign also contributed to Cylera’s ability to secure Series B funding, positioning the company for further growth.

Reflection

This project underscored the critical importance of a user-centered design approach in complex, high-stakes environments like healthcare cybersecurity. The emphasis on role-based customization, actionable insights, and data clarity was instrumental in improving adoption and engagement across Cylera’s user base.

Next Steps: Future improvements may include AI-driven alert prioritization and expanded customization for each role, further enhancing Cylera’s capabilities in healthcare IoT management.
